Welcome to the nuclear medicine training. You will discover videos that explain the procedures, scheduling process, and locations. Additionally, below, you will find scheduling guidelines for specific exams.

Scheduling guidelines for various procedures that must be followed in a specific order:

PET/CT SCAN AND WB BONE SCAN

The PET scan should be conducted first, followed by the WB bone scan 24 hours later. If, for any reason, the WB bone scan must be done first, the PET SCAN must be scheduled at least 48 hours (about 2 days) afterward.

GASTRIC EMPTY AND HIDA SCAN

The gastric emptying study should be scheduled first, followed by the HIDA scan 48 hours (about 2 days) later.

WHOLE BODY BONE SCAN or 3 PHASE BONE SCAN AND GALLIUM SCAN

The bone scan should be scheduled first, and the Gallium scan should be scheduled a minimum of 48 hours (about 2 days) after.

GASTRIC EMPTY AND WB BONE SCAN

These should be scheduled 48 hours (about 2 days) apart.

THYROID UPTAKE SCAN AND THYROID TREATMENT

The uptake scan should be scheduled first, with treatment immediately following the 24-hour scan.

Regarding same-day scheduling of Nuclear Medicine scans and non-Nuclear Med scans:

  • PET/CT SCAN AND ANY CT SCAN W CONTRAST – PET/CT to be done first
  • DEXA SCAN AND ANY NM PROCEDURE (MOST COMMON PARATHYROID SCAN, BONE SCANS, OR PET SCANS) – DEXA scan must be done first.
  • HIDA SCAN AND CT ABDOMEN and PELVIS – HIDA scan must be done first
  • GASTRIC EMPTY AND CT ABDOMEN and PELVIS – Gastric Empty must be done first
