Ultrasound (US) examinations are available at all Houston Medical Imaging (HMI) locations, excluding Shepherd and Edinburg. Refer to the list below for the most common types of ultrasounds, accompanied by an informative video providing an overview of what an ultrasound entail.

Common types of ultrasounds

Abdominal Ultrasound

Used to examine the organs in the abdomen, such as the liver, gallbladder, spleen, and kidneys.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Focuses on the organs in the pelvic region, including the uterus and ovaries in females, and the prostate in males.

Obstetric Ultrasound

Specifically for monitoring the development and health of a fetus during pregnancy.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

A type of pelvic ultrasound performed using a special transducer inserted into the vagina, providing a more detailed view of the pelvic organs.

Breast Ultrasound

Often used as a supplemental imaging tool to mammography for breast examination.

Thyroid Ultrasound

Examines the thyroid gland to assess its structure and detect any abnormalities.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Used to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints for diagnostic purposes.

Vascular Ultrasound

Examines blood vessels to assess blood flow and identify any blockages or abnormalities.

Echocardiography (Cardiac Ultrasound)
